I explored IFS through fictional characters

A case study of Aang from Avatar The Last Airbender

Hello!

This week I decided to challenge my understanding of IFS concepts and see if I could apply it in a case study analysis of Avatar Aang, from Avatar the Last Airbender - my favorite childhood series.

I’ve probably watched the series at least 8 times over, and to this very day it’s at the top of my recommendations list; it’s an inspiring story, the characters have rich and relatable narratives, and it’s all set in a realm that isn’t very favorable towards cabbage vendors.

Long story short, it was a really cool exercise as I felt it helped me connect with the character of Aang on a more conscious level than when I had just been passively enjoying his character in the past. I have attached the resultant summary as a poster in the bottom of this letter 🙂 If you have any thoughts, I would love to hear.

Next up is Zuko, and then Toph I think, and I also think that the characters from the Arcane series would make brilliant case studies so perhaps they’ll be up in future.

Randomly, a neat fable I stumbled upon this week was the story of the sun and the north wind. One day they decided to contest, the victorious party being whoever could remove the cloak of a traveling nomad. The wind went first, blowing it’s strongest gale as it fought to remove the travellers cloak. In response to the cold gusts, the traveller wrapped himself tighter. The sun tried a different approach, bathing the traveling in warm beams of light. Feeling content in the heat of the day, the traveller removed his cloak, and the sun prevailed.

All this to say that warmth and gentleness can be more effective than force and strength.

Finally, I thought I would share three journaling prompts I have regularly come back to this week…

  • What’s one small thing that made today easier?

  • Is there a part of me showing up strongly right now? What does it want me to know?

  • If I were a weather forecast today, what would I be and why?

Cheers,

James
